Niccolò Sagredo (born September 18, 1606 in Venice ; † August 14, 1676 there ) was the 105th Doge of Venice . He ruled from 1675 to 1676.

family

The Sagredo were among the latest family, the case novisseme that until after the War of Chioggia in the circle of Nobili had been added. However, they traced their family tree back to the Romans. He was the eldest of eight sons of the procurator of San Marco Zaccaria Sagredo and Paula Foscari, a direct descendant of Francesco Foscari . Of his ten siblings, two brothers died in the fighting for Candia (Crete), one brother was the Patriarch of Venice. One of his ancestors is one of the saints of the Catholic Church, Gherardo ( Gellért ), abbot of the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio , who was martyred in Hungary in 1046.
The family was one of the richest in Venice. At the time of his election, in addition to a palace in the city, they owned extensive estates in Veneto , Istria and Dalmatia .

Life

Sagredo was considered a skillful diplomat and gifted speaker. He had served the city as a diplomat and in administrative posts. As an ambassador to the Spanish court, he was awarded the title of Cavaliere .

The Doge's Office

On February 2, 1675, he was elected Doge by a large majority in the first ballot. He won over the Venetians through his generosity and charitable work, so that his death after a little more than a year of reign was deeply mourned. He died on August 14, 1676 and was buried in the family chapel of the Sagredo in the church of San Francesco della Vigna .
