Matthäus Karl Fitzkow (born September 29, 1900 in Liebenwerda ; † September 18, 1970 ) was a German writer , monument protector and local history researcher .

Life

Karl Fitzkow was born as the eldest son of the painter Carl Fitzkow in Liebenwerda. He attended the Liebenwerda primary school, which he left as the best in his class in 1914. From 1914 to 1918 Fitzkow learned the profession of mechanic and practiced it until 1921. He then took on a position as an administrative clerk in the district administration of the Liebenwerda district . From 1929 to 1933 Karl Fitzkow was a member of the magistrate in Bad Liebenwerda. He was 2nd chairman of the Heimatverein in Bad Liebenwerda and archivist of the State Main Archives Magdeburg for the district of Liebenwerda and district building monument curator.

In 1929 Fitzkow successfully passed the examination for administrative secretary. At the age of 16, Fitzkow became a member of a trade union and began to be interested in the lives of ordinary people. From 1920 he was politically active in the SPD , the German Peace Society, and the League for Human Rights. Disappointed by the Weimar Republic , he saw the NSDAP as an opportunity for a more just Germany. In this misunderstanding, Fitzkow tried to promote the NSDAP with his liberal stance, but this led to his dismissal in 1933 for political reasons. After a short period of unemployment, Fitzkow got a job in the Bad Liebenwerda land registry office . In 1936 he became office manager in the Kreissiedlungsgesellschaft mb.H. in Bad Liebenwerda until it was dissolved in 1945. Since 1933, the NSDAP repeatedly tried to oust Fitzkow from his jobs because they mistrusted him. In order to avoid persistent discrimination, Fitzkow joined the NSDAP in 1937. From 1939 to 1940 Fitzkow was drafted into military service.

His membership in the NSDAP led to the loss of his job in 1945 after a short imprisonment. He was also no longer allowed to work as a volunteer archivist. Fitzkow was assigned a job in the furniture factory in Bad Liebenwerda as a mechanic.

It was not until 1953 that Fitzkow was able to take over the management of the city library and start building the district museum in Bad Liebenwerda.

After 1949 Fitzkow founded and led the working group of nature and homeland friends of the Kulturbund . He was also a leading member of various organizations dealing with culture and history and departments of the district Bad Liebenwerda and the district Cottbus such as the Society for the dissemination of scientific knowledge .

Works

the Lubwart Tower in Liebenwerda 1953

Since 1916 Karl Fitzkow was able to publish numerous writings on his local history research in the local calendars of the Liebenwerda district and the journal Schwarze Elster . But Karl Fitzkow also wrote two plays on local history. In addition to his numerous voluntary activities, Fitzkow also worked as a speaker for lectures on local history. The series of home calendars, which he published from 1955 until his death in 1970, is scientifically reliable, but still easy to understand. His successful work in the rescue of numerous historical buildings, such as the Lubwart Tower in Bad Liebenwerda, for which he was able to implement an extensive facade renovation and thus prevented demolition, should be emphasized .

  • Numerous articles in local publications from 1916 to 1969
  • On the medieval history of the city of Liebenwerda: A contribution to the history of rural urban development in the Rechtsel area in 1956
  • On the older history of the city of Liebenwerda and its district in 1961
