Interpretation of the place name

The offices of Hayn and Zabeltitz around 1752

The name Kolmenicz comes from Old Sorbian and means something like 'place in hilly terrain' or 'place on the hill brook' from Cholm, which means hill.

Development of the place name

  • 1378: Kolmenicz
  • 1456: Kolmenitz
  • 1493: Kolmitz
  • 1540: Colmitz
  • 1554: Kolwicz
  • 1875: Collmnitz

Colmnitz was first mentioned in 1378 as a village owned by the Großenhain Castle and subject to interest by the Meissen margrave. In 1456 the lords of Köckeritz received the village as a fief. In 1475, five farmers and a village judge lived in Colmnitz . In 1493 Colmnitz Dietrich von Schleinitz acquired . The place remained in the family's possession until the beginning of the 18th century. There was a sheep farm in town as early as 1520. The plague raged in the area from 1611 to 1612. Fires raged in the village again and again and the Thirty Years' War also claimed many victims. In 1638 almost the whole village burned down as a result of the Thirty Years War, which caused great hardship among the residents. The place was desolate until 1566 and was then slowly rebuilt. In 1575 there were nine homeowners again.

A beginning school system is known from an early age. In 1555 the custos of Bauda taught the children. From 1804 to 1839 there was a hiking school in the village, which in turn taught on the various farms and in 1853 a schoolhouse was built. Since July 28, 1578, beer has been served. In 1760, the farmers are said to have supplied the Prussian soldiers camped on the Colmnitzberg with cattle before they went into the Seven Years' War against the Austrians. In 1830 a windmill was found in the village for the first time.

The LPG Colmnitz was founded in 1955. From 1968, the yields on the barren Colmnitz soils could be increased significantly through melioration , as a newly built irrigation system in the Grödel-Elsterwerda canal area was put into operation. On October 1, 1960, the community kindergarten was opened, which many children from the surrounding areas also attended. In 1968 the first water pipe was laid in Colmnitz and the place was connected to the drinking water network.

The inn was demolished together with the former administration building of the LPG Kanalgebiet Riesa after the fall of the Wall because no investor could be found. At the beginning of the 1990s the kindergarten had to be closed. The building was rebuilt and is now used as a youth club. Colmnitz was also hit by the tornado on Whit Monday 2010. Several houses in the village and the church roof were damaged. In the summer of 2012, the Colmnitz volunteer fire brigade was abolished due to personnel problems.

Colmnitz Church

The first known church was built in the 12th century and expanded around 1400 to include a west building with frescoes with arcades, tendrils and saints with books. It burned down during the Thirty Years' War, probably together with the village in 1638, and was not rebuilt until 1674. In 1784 the stately prayer house was torn down and the church was rebuilt again in 1798 and a vestibule was added.

In 1910 the old church building was torn down and a new church was built. Only two wooden pillars remained of the old church on either side of the altar. The ceiling is a barrel vault painted with angel heads in Art Nouveau style. The organ is a work of the Jehmlich company . In 1993 a new clock face was attached to the tower, based on the Art Nouveau style. The place never had its own pastor and was repeatedly assigned to other parishes.

The churchyard is used as a cemetery. Services are celebrated in the sacristy, which has been converted into a community room. Ecclesiastically, the place belonged to the Peritz district until 1540 , then to the Baudaer church. Since 1925 the church has belonged to Wildenhain as a subsidiary church. Colmnitz has belonged to the Streumen parish since 2001 and to Ev.-Luth since the beginning of 2013. Meißen-Grossenhain church district.
