The Strategic Railway Oschatz – Röderau (popularly also known as the rocket railway ) was a railway line in Saxony built for military reasons . The single-track route ran from Oschatz along the narrow-gauge railway Oschatz – Strehla to the Elbe, which was closed in 1972 , where it was to lead to the other bank and on to the Röderau railway junction by means of a military bridge to be built in an emergency . Its purpose was to have another Elbe crossing next to the existing bridge at Riesa.

history

In 1978, the first preparatory work began on a strategic bypass line around Riesa , which was to partially use the route of the narrow-gauge railway Oschatz – Strehla, which was closed in 1972. The actual construction work began in 1979 and the planum could already be completed in 1980 . The alignment turned out to be difficult, as there were significantly smaller arc radii on the former narrow-gauge railway line that were unsuitable for normal-gauge operation. Until 1986 the line was used as a roadway , only afterwards were the tracks laid by members of the railway construction regiment 2 "Erich Steinfurth" stationed in Walddrehna .

The line was opened on March 20, 1987, but as a result of the political change in eastern Germany in 1989/90, the newly built line was superfluous shortly after its completion. The route was never used for its actual purpose. Until the early 1990s, mostly damaged wagons of the type Es were parked on the track, which were intended for repairs in the Dresden Reichsbahn repair shop .

In 1996, not even ten years after the opening, the switch at the Schmorkau alternative junction was expanded. In 2003, the route between Schmorkau and the western bridge bearing of the planned military bridge was largely dismantled - tracks in the western part are still available at Strehla, between Oschatzer Strasse and Bundesstrasse 182 . The eastern part of the line to Röderau was used for a while as a siding for a gravel works , but is now out of service. After about half a kilometer, the track ends at a buffer stop, about 1 kilometer from the Elbe dike.
