The Dreikönigschule grammar school is a grammar school in a listed building in the Saxon state capital Dresden . The school is located in the Äußere Neustadt district (Antonstadt).

history

The three crowns (above the "DKS") - symbol for the grammar school

Today's Dreikönigschule grammar school was formed in 1992 as part of the Saxon school reform from the 22nd Dresden Polytechnic School . The original Dreikönigschule was on today's Wigardstrasse.

The school building was built in 1894 as the 22nd district school. The building survived the air raids of February 13, 1945 relatively unscathed. In 1992 the school was founded under the name "Gymnasium Dresden-Neustadt". The inside of the building was also renovated that year. Here, new sanitary facilities and a modern heating system were installed. The building is listed as a cultural monument. On October 31, 1997, the Dresden-Neustadt grammar school received the name of this once well-known and traditional Saxon grammar school from the old students of the former Dreikönigschule. This also gives rise to the school's logo: three crowns arranged side by side, each with three visible tips. This symbol can also be found above the entrance door at the Louisenstrasse entrance.

2017 found construction workers during the renovation of the complex in the schoolyard a slashing and stabbing weapons -Sammlung of flagship and ceremonial swords. An employee of the State Office for Archeology said: "The latest pieces are from 1945 ... We assume that a collector wanted to dispose of them quickly before the Russians came to town."

School grounds and buildings

The grammar school consists of three separate buildings: House A, B and C.

Facade of the grammar school on Louisenstrasse

House A is located directly on Louisenstrasse and houses, among other things, the school library, the auditorium and the school cinema. It is also the most architecturally interesting building in the school. However, the facade needs renovation and a new coat of paint. One particular detail is hidden at a great height and is visible from Louisenstrasse, but is usually not noticed. It is the relief of the city's coat of arms on the central gable in a rather ornate variant.

Relief of the city coat of arms

House B can be reached from the entrance on Rothenburger Straße. It houses specialist cabinets for biology, chemistry, physics, computers and technology as well as art education, a dining room, the doctor's room and the changing rooms for physical education. In House B, grades 5 to 7 are mainly taught.

House C includes the school museum, another dining room and specialist rooms for biology, chemistry and physics.

Behind house C, next to the barn area on Alaunstrasse, a new two-field sports hall with parking deck was built on a communal property (previously an interim parking lot) in a year and a half. The hall, which was inaugurated in September 2015 and is also used by the Dresden Basketball Club, replaces the old sports hall in the schoolyard from 1887, which is still used for climbing and by Dresden clubs, but is to be demolished in the long term. In addition, the high school uses the sports hall of the 15th primary school on Görlitzer Straße.

School profile

Profile lesson

At the grammar school, grades 8 to 10 have a natural, social and artistic profile . As part of the artistic profile, there is close cooperation with the project theater. With the support of actors from the project theater, the students develop their own plays. A rehearsal camp is organized annually in February. The annual highlight is the culture days at the end of March. The students then play on the stage of the project theater for around two weeks.

The scientific profile lessons use the opportunities for cooperation with the TU Dresden , the Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf and the German Aerospace Center .

A social science profile has also been offered since the 2012/2013 school year .

Advanced courses

The advanced courses offered in the Abitur level can vary depending on the year. The prerequisite is that the minimum number of participants has been reached. Students can choose mathematics , physics , German , history or English as an advanced course. Other subjects are possible. The high school also offers an advanced course in art.

The school sports club is particularly successful in basketball and table tennis . A special feature are the climbing work group and the climbing club, which train on their own climbing wall in the old sports hall .

Artistic

The school's own choir "multicolor" has existed since 1991. Here, the students work on a wide range of songs every year and perform them publicly several times a year. The choir in which pupils of the younger classes take part is called “microcolor”. A highlight is the annual Christmas concert in the Dreikönigskirche . The choir also recorded its own CD several times.

Since 2008, students can participate in the guitar ensemble. It also appears at the Christmas concert. Interested pupils can also work in the theater working group “Dreikönigplayer” in their free time. Further all-day offers can be found on the school's website.
