Pratteln Castle

The Pratteln Castle is a former Weiherschloss in the center of the Pratteln municipality . Originally the castle was free-standing on the northern edge of the village center. Today the castle stands in the midst of a 19th century building and is protected by the Swiss Confederation .

description

The castle has a square floor plan with rounded corners, supplemented by a tower and a gate system on the south side and a kitchen area on the east side. The four-storey main building on the east side takes up around half of the floor space, the rest is used by an inner courtyard, which is delimited by two side wings on the north and south side and a wall on the west side.

The outer facade is plastered white. The upper part of the entrance gate is designed as a half-timbered structure , as well as the inside of the side wings and the parts of the facade of the kitchen extension. A drawbridge used to be attached to the gate system. The main building has two round corner towers and a hipped roof on the outer edge . A tower next to the gate connects the main building with the southern wing. While the lower part of the tower is still round, the upper part has a polygonal figure.

history

Pratteln Castle from the north and south-east on a pen drawing by GF Meyer from 1678.

In 1275 the castle was built by the Lords of Eptingen in the same year as Madeln Castle . On October 18, 1356, when the Basel earthquake struck, the castle was completely destroyed. Immediately afterwards it was rebuilt by the Eptingians. Due to financial difficulties and disputes within the Eptingen, Hans Friedrich von Eptingen sold the castle with the village of Pratteln to the city of Basel for 5000 guilders in 1521 . After Austria renounced the rule of Pratteln in 1549, the castle was assigned to the Basel manor and the Münchensteiner Landvogtei. The lord of the castle then became a private "country gentleman" without sovereign powers. The castle was owned by citizens of Basel, who changed frequently. In 1773 the castle and its large property changed hands and from then on belonged to the public sector. The municipality sold the property to its residents in lots the next year, but kept the castle and converted it into a poor house .

1910 gave citizens municipality of Pratteln the castle of the municipality , which on 24 June 1963 by the municipal assembly for 1,100,000 francs approved a total renovation. On September 8th, 1968 the castle was inaugurated again with a big festival. The castle is now under the protection of the Swiss Confederation.
