Locking point Hülftenschanze

prehistory

Monument «Hülftenschanz»

The access from the Rhine to the Basel cantonal capital of Liestal and the Tafeljura could by three redoubts on both sides of the river Ergolz be defended: In Frenkendorf with the behind the Hülftengraben hill at the Grien pit and the north located it Hülftenschanz (1689 built at today Hülftenhof) and in Füllinsdorf with the north-east opposite Birch hill . The decisive military confrontation took place at the Griengrube ski jump in August 1833 in connection with the separation of the Basel cantons .

history

After plans were available as early as 1935, construction work began in 1937 on the Liestal-Hülften border fortification with the anti-tank obstacle by engineering troops and in 1938 by construction companies with the Hülften and Buholz infantry bunkers. After the mobilization , the border brigade built 4 up to the end of active duty 70 concrete infantry bunkers and shelters. In March 1940 the locking point was ready for use. From 1941 she was part of the Ergolz-Gempen Combat Group (Grenzregiment 48).

The blocking point had to block access from the north into the Tabular Jura and to the Upper and Lower Hauenstein Passes in the Swiss Plateau.
