The Hauenstein fortification was the most important army position against the north during the First World War .

During the Second World War , the Hauenstein blocking point was one of several blocking points (Diepflingen, Tschattnau, Läufelfingen, Pulfisei, Hauenstein, Trimbach) on the central Sissach- Hauenstein- Olten axis . The pass, which was easily navigable, was of great strategic importance, as the enemy could get directly to the Swiss plateau and the Olten traffic junction from there .

The five focal points of the blocking point are at the GPH Adliken on the road to Wisen , at the top of the pass north and west (at the Gsal artillery position) of the village of Hauenstein and at Pulfisei (also Pulvisei) and Bitzenfeld. The Pulfisei infantry and the Gsal and Reisen-Pulfisei artillery positions supported the barriers with their fire.

The following systems belonged to the blocking point:

Tank rifle / anti-tank stand disguised as a forelock (converted field cannon shield) (army designation A 3550) near Adliken , 7.5 cm field cannon shield south of the village of Hauenstein (broken off today). The existing GPH at Adliken was strengthened and supplemented in May 1941.

Artillery position Reisen-Pulfisei

In the area on both sides of the Pulfisei barrier near Muregg and Reisen , four bunkers for old 8.4 cm cannons were built to make up for the lack of modern artillery. In December 1940 construction began on the Muregg above Pulfisei.

The position consists of the four artillery bunkers “Reisen Ost” A 3551 , “Reisen Mitte” A 3552 , “Reisen West” A 3553 and “Muregg” A 3556 .

Lock point Pulfisei

The Pulfisei blocking point is located shortly before the top of the pass on the north side and blocks Hauensteinstrasse through two plants (A 3554, A 3555). It was built in 1944. The artillery position Reisen-Pulfisei is located near and on both sides of the valley.

The restricted area includes the “Pulfisei” A 3554 infantry work , which is located near the Pulvisei farm on the old Hauensteinstrasse, the A 3555 field cannon shield (next to the Pulvisei farm ), a nuclear shelter (ASU) and road barricades over the old and new ones Hauensteinstrasse.

Artillery position Gsal

The artillery position is on the eastern ridge of the Kesselberg south of the hamlet of Gsal. It is a battery with four gun positions for 12 cm cannons of the mobile artillery. The position was created in 1940 by the Renfer building department.

The position consists of the four artillery bunkers (from east to west) "Gsal" A 3557 , A 3558 , A 3559 , A 3560 .

Challhöchi lock

A western bypass of the Hauenstein via Challhöchi was secured with the locking point there. It consisted of the two terrain armor obstacles (GPH) "Challhöchi Ost" and "Challhöchi", a street barricade (in front of A 3575) and the infantry bunkers behind it, "Challhöchi Ost" A 3574 , "Challhöchi West" A 3575 , "Challhöchi southwest »A 3576 with shelter A 3577 .

The flanking bunkers “Challhöchi Ost” and “Challhöchi West” were able to give each other fire protection. Both were modernized during Army 61 with a 9 cm anti-tank gun 50/57 , a 7.5 mm machine gun 51 and a collective gas protection system.

The 9 cm anti-tank guns had a rate of fire of 10-12 rounds per minute (hollow armor grenades, steel grenades) and a range of 500 (moving tanks) to 1200 (people) meters. They were served by four men (judge, loader, informers, observer). The machine gun with recoil loader had a rate of 1000 rounds per minute and a range of 1000 meters.
