The Birseck is a geographical area on the lower Birs and includes in the Swiss canton of Basel-Land , the five municipalities Arlesheim , Münchenstein , Reinach , Aesch and Pfeffingen and the the Canton Solothurn associated Dornach .

After the Klus von Angenstein begins one of the largest valley landscapes in Europe, the Upper Rhine Plain . The Birseck is the uppermost part of the Upper Rhine Plain, which extends from Aesch over 300 kilometers northwards to the area of Frankfurt am Main .

history

The Birseck at the gates of the city of Basel was part of the Prince Diocese of Basel . Although it came under the influence of the Basel Reformation, it was subject to the prince-bishopric due to the Baden Treaty of 1585 on the occasion of the Counter-Reformation . The Landvogtei Birseck was not identical to the geographical name (see connection of the Birseck to Basel ). In 1815, the Congress of Vienna decided to assign its areas to Bern and Basel. Therefore, in contrast to the rest of the canton of Basel-Landschaft, the population is predominantly Roman Catholic .
