The Freuler Palace is a baroque mansion in the village of Näfels in the canton of Glarus .

history

The facility was built between 1642 and 1647 for Kaspar Freuler , a French officer from Näfels. The Freuler family had to sell the manor house to the Näfels community in 1840 for financial reasons. In the years 1937 to 1942 a renovation was carried out by the "Foundation for the Freuler Palace", which later bought the building complex. The " Museum des Landes Glarus ", which is dedicated to the history of the canton, especially the history of industry and tourism, has been located in the Freuler Palace since 1946 .

Bay window in Gothic style baroque

In addition to the two-winged main building, the walled courtyard includes stables and a baroque garden reconstructed in 1942. The facades are characterized by sweeping dormer windows and painted shutters and exposed masonry cornices. The polygonal bay window on the south side of the main wing shows post-Gothic forms, while the portals have Mannerist features.

The splendid Sala Terena on the ground floor has early baroque designs. Noteworthy is rich with stucco provided vaulted ceiling and marble fireplace. The ballroom on the upper floor is equipped with an elaborately carved coffered ceiling . The open bay window connects to the ballroom and houses a small house chapel with a baroque columned altar. There are delightful tiled stoves in various rooms .

The Freuler Palace is one of the most magnificent mansions in Switzerland. It is considered an excellent example of early baroque secular architecture in the Alpine region.
