Kaspar Freuler (* around 1595 in Näfels , Canton Glarus ; † November 1, 1651 between Bourges and Poitiers ) was a Swiss soldier and troop leader .

Kaspar Freuler was born around 1595 in Näfels , Canton Glarus, as the son of Christoph Freuler and grandson of the famous mercenary leader Kaspar Gallati , who was in command of the Swiss Guards Regiment from 1616 to 1619.

Freuler was married twice: once to Margareta Hässi, daughter of Fridolin Hässi, who was in command of the Swiss Guard Regiment from 1628 to 1635, and then to Anna Reding, daughter of Heinrich Reding.

Kaspar Freuler died on November 1st, 1651 between Bourges and Poitiers and is buried in Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe ( Poitou ).

Military career

He entered French service in the Gallati regiment in 1613, became a lieutenant in 1613 and captain of the colonel in the Swiss Guards Regiment in 1619 and its commander from 1635 to 1651. His successor in the command from 1651 to 1655 was his brother-in-law Johann Melchior Hässi.

He took part in numerous campaigns by Louis XIII. participated, for example in the siege of La Rochelle , in southern France against the Huguenots , against Spain and in the occupation of the imperial-friendly Lorraine in 1633 as part of the Thirty Years War . He protected Louis XIV with the Guard during the Fronde and was fatally wounded in 1651 fighting in the streets of Paris.

He was ennobled in 1637 and made Knight of the Order of St. Michael in 1646 .

The Freuler Palace

He built the Freuler Palace in Näfels from 1642 to 1648 .
