Bridge over the Gartempe

Saint-Savin , formerly Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe called, is a French commune in the department of Vienne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine with 846 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017). The community it belongs to Canton Montmorillon , was mainly due to the abbey of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe , which in 1983 as a UNESCO - World Heritage Site was awarded known.

etymology

Savin is the name of a bishop who is also called Sabinian. He was the first bishop of Sens and served in the second half of the third century. He founded several churches, probably including this abbey. Gartempe is the name of the small river that flows directly past the choir of the abbey church.

geography

Saint-Savin is located in the Gartempe valley , right on the banks of the river at an average altitude of 87 m. Originally located on the border of the historical provinces of Poitou and Berry , Saint-Savin is now part of the Vienne department. The distance from Paris is around 310 km and from Poitiers around 45 km.

history

The first traces show a settlement in the Gallo-Roman era. In 1820 the formerly independent municipality of Mont-Saint-Savin was incorporated.

Saint-Savin has been twinned with the Belgian city of Malle in Flanders since 1960 and with the German city of Heusenstamm in Hesse since 1969 .
