Charroux is a French village with 1,136 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vienne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Montmorillon and the canton of Civray .
history
In the High Middle Ages, Charroux was the capital of the county of La Marche . The Council of Charroux took place here in 989, during which the peace of God was proclaimed under the patronage of William IV , Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Poitou .

- From the Abbey of Saint-Sauveur de Charroux , one in the year 785 by Roger, Viscount of Limoges , and in 1762 closed founded Benedictine -Abtei are preserved only remnants.
