Montmorillon at the Gartempe

Montmorillon is a French municipality with 5954 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vienne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ; it is the administrative seat of the arrondissement of Montmorillon and the capital of the canton of Montmorillon .

The community is considered a book village in France .

geography

Montmorillon is 50 kilometers southeast of Poitiers and 90 kilometers northwest of Limoges . The Gartempe flows through the place.

history

In the Middle Ages there was a castle in Montmorillon on a rock near the Notre-Dame church, but nothing remains of it.

Attractions

  • The Octagon of Montmorillon is a Romanesque cemetery chapel from the 12th century. It has been under monument protection as Monument historique since 1840 .
  • The church Notre-Dame was built from the 12th to the 14th century. The apse of the crypt contains a large fresco depicting the mystical marriage of St. Catherine and the Christ child. It is the oldest example of this iconography from the late 12th or early 13th century. In the center the enthroned Mother of God is depicted, holding the boy who extends his right hand to the crowned Katharina.
  • The chapel of Saint-Laurent des Maison-Dieu with a facade from the 12th century has also been a monument historique since 1840.
  • The neo-Gothic church Saint-Martial of the 19th century stands on the site of a previous Romanesque church.
