Régine Deforges (1996)

Régine Deforges (born August 15, 1935 in Montmorillon , Département Vienne , † April 3, 2014 in Paris ) was a French feminist writer and erotic literature publisher.

Life

Deforges wanted to leave the small town of Montmorillon in Poitou at an early age , where she was sent to various Catholic schools such as the École Saint-Martial. When she was 15 years old, her intimate diary, which she had kept about her love affair with a classmate of the same age, was stolen. The publication caused a scandal. The volume of stories published in 1978, Le Cahier volé (literally: The stolen notebook, published in German with the title Zärtliches Tagebuch. Roman ), makes these events of 1950/51 its theme.

In 1967, at the age of 32, Deforges was one of the first women to set up her own publishing house in France . The publisher's name L'Or du Temps (German: the gold of the times) goes back to a bon mot by André Breton , "Je cherche l'or du temps." As a publisher, Deforges had to fight censorship measures because of allegedly offensive erotic literature and legal proceedings were initiated against her, for example in relation to Le Con d'Irène (literally: Irenes Fotze , published in German in 1969 with the title Irène ) by Louis Aragon . In 1980 Deforges directed the film Les Filles de madame Claude (literally: Madame Claude's daughters). In the 1990s and since 2000, several film and television productions were made based on her works and for which she wrote some of the scripts herself. Deforge's novel, The Blue Bicycle (1981) became a bestseller in France with translations into 22 languages. The novel is about love and survival during the German occupation 1941–1945. In the following 16 years Deforges created a ten-volume series in which the protagonists also live in Algiers and Cuba beyond the post-war period. In 2000, a television series with this material followed.

From 1989 to 1992 Deforges was president of the French writers' association, the Société des Gens de Lettres de France (SGDL) (literally: Society of French writers). In addition, she was a member of the jury of the Prix Femina feminist literary prize for several years . In 2006 she resigned in solidarity with fellow writer Madeleine Chapsal , who had previously been excluded. In autumn 2013, after three years of work, Deforges published her 480-page autobiography with the title L'Enfant du 15 août (literally: The child of August 15) by Robert Laffont.

Deforges lived and worked in Paris. She was most recently married to Pierre Wiazemsky (Wiaz), the cartoonist for the weekly newspaper Nouvel Observateur , and before that to fellow publisher Jean-Jacques Pauvert . She fathered her two daughters with these men, and from her first marriage to the film producer Pierre Spengler came her son Franck Spengler, who, after studying history, followed in his mother's footsteps as an erotic publisher and author.

Régine Deforges died in April 2014 as a result of a heart attack at the Hôpital Cochin in Paris. French President François Hollande paid tribute to Deforges in an official statement according to the wording of the dpa report "as a rebel who was passionate about feminism and the fight against taboos."
