Etienne de Vignolles
Étienne de Vignolles , called La Hire (* around 1390 in Vignolles ; † January 11, 1443 in Montauban ) was a French knight .
Étienne de Vignolles fought at the siege of Orléans in 1429 on the side of Joan of Arc , later that year distinguished himself at Jargeau and Patay . In 1431 he tried to free Joan of Arc from Rouen , but failed and was taken prisoner by the English. The following year he managed to escape. He took up the fight against the English again, fought victoriously in the Artois , in the Île-de-France and Picardy , but also multiplied the number of looting and atrocities. At the beginning of 1443 he accompanied King Charles VII to Montauban , where he died on January 11 of the wounds he had suffered.
His nickname La Hire ( ire , French for anger ) is due to his emotionality and violence.
The jack of hearts of French playing cards is called La Hire (referring to Étienne de Vignolles) and is often written Lahire .
