La Bâtiaz Castle

The castle La Bâtiaz ( French Château de la Bâtiaz ) is the ruin of a hilltop castle in Martigny in the canton of Valais in Switzerland .

history

The Bishop of Sitten Landri de Mont ordered the construction of a castle in 1232 to control the strategically important pass road to the Great St. Bernhard . The castle La Bâtiaz (derived from the word bastida for "fortress") served as a replacement for the fortress La Crête in Martigny-Bourg .

After 1250, Duke Peter of Savoy declared war on the Bishop of Martigny. He conquered the two fortresses La Bâtiaz and La Crête, which were abandoned after a few years, and had the mighty round tower built , which is still preserved today . La Bâtiaz then fell to the Bishop of Sion , who expanded the castle.

During the Burgundian Wars in the 15th century, the castle remained the scene of conflicts between the Dukes of Savoy and the Bishop of Sion and changed hands several times. As a result of the civil war between Georg Supersaxo and Matthäus Schiner , the castle was burned down in 1518 on the orders of Supersaxo.

The castle was not rebuilt, but is in good condition again after restoration work in 1980. It can be visited during the summer months, and some siege engines are shown in operation when the weather is nice .

The castle is a cultural asset of national importance .
