features

The two-spotted barb becomes 7 centimeters long. Your body is much slimmer than most other Puntius species. The basic color is silvery, especially the back is bronze, copper-colored or tinted green. On the back and side there is a fine net markings, a black spot on the base of the caudal fin, another under the rear section of the dorsal fin (under the rays 3–7). The fins are colorless to slightly orange. The fish have a pair of barbels . The male is slimmer. They have two longitudinal ligaments, a greenish to bluish one above and a wine-red one below, from the tip of the snout to the spot on the base of the caudal fin.

The two- spotted barbel is of other Indian puntius species due to its seven divided dorsal fin rays (otherwise eight), and from the very similar but larger puntius dorsalis additionally by the round spot below the dorsal fin (elongated and below the fin rays 4–8 in P. dorsalis ) and distinguish the spot on the caudal fin base (on the caudal fin stalk P. dorsalis ).

Way of life

The two-spotted barbel lives both in the lowlands and in the mountains in streams, rivers and swamps. It feeds mainly on green algae and detritus . Spawning females lay around 200 to 1000 eggs. The fish larvae hatch after about 24 hours and swim free after four days.
