The Baishan Dam ( Chinese 白山 水库 (桦甸) , translated: "Dam near the White Mountains") is a dam with an arched weight wall on a tributary (Second Songhua Jiang) of the Songhua Jiang near Huadian in Jilin Province in the People's Republic of China . The purpose of the dam is to generate electricity from hydropower and flood protection . The dam supplies five turbines and generators in two power houses with an installed capacity of 1500 MW. It can also handle a flood discharge of 19,100 m³ / s. It is also possible to use it as a pumped storage power plant with 300 MW.
construction
Construction of the dam began in May 1975, the reservoir began to fill on September 16, 1982, and by the end of 1984 the first three generators were operational (phase I). Another two generators from the second phase of the project went into operation in 1992. Since the reservoir flooded an area of 17.67 km², around 10,300 people had to be resettled.
In March 2000 a feasibility study for a pumped storage plant was carried out . In August 2002 the construction of two 150 MW pump turbines began , which were ready for operation in July 2006.
Buildings
The Baishan dam is a 149.5 m high and 677.5 m long arch weight dam made of 1,663,000 m³ concrete. It dams a 6500 million m³ reservoir , of which 3540 million m³ are classified as usable space and 950 million m³ of flood protection space . The flood relief consists of four 12 m × 13 m overflows and three 6 m × 7 m outflow openings at medium height. All culverts together can discharge a planned design water volume of 19,100 m³ / s, or in the second design case 26,200 m³ / s and a maximum of 32,200 m³ / s.
The power plant consists of three power houses. The first to be built is in a cavern . It contains 3 × 300 MW Francis turbines and generators. The second power plant is located on the left bank of the river and is equipped with 2 × 300 MW turbines and generators. The third part of the hydropower plant consists of the 2 × 150 MW pump turbines . The Baishan Reservoir serves as the upper basin and the reservoir of the Hongshi Reservoir further downstream as the lower basin.
The hydraulic drop is 110 m. An average of 2040 GWh of energy is generated per year.
The dam is named after the Baekdu Mountains (White Mountains) and is located near the city of Baishan .
