The Fengman Dam is one of the first large dams to be built in China. It was built in northeast China on the Songhua Jiang River in Jilin Province 24 km southeast of the city of the same name . Her Chinese name is Fengman Daba ( Chinese豐滿 大壩 / 丰满 大坝Pinyin Fēngmǎn Dàbà, Fengman Dam ) or Fengman Shuiba ( Chinese豐滿 水壩 / 丰满 水坝 Pinyin Fēngmǎn Shuǐbà, Fengman dam ).
The dam has a gravity dam as a barrier structure . It is 91.7 m high, 1080 m long and consists of 60 sections, each 18 m long and numbered from left to right. The water can flow over the wall at sections 9 to 19 (as a flood relief ). Sections 21 to 31 are intake structures with pressure pipes with a diameter of 5.6 m that guide the water to the turbines . In addition to the ten main turbines, there is also a smaller one with a 1.6 m pipe for personal use. Another source speaks of eight turbines.
Between 1937 and 1942, the Japanese occupying forces began building the dam to generate energy from hydropower . The first impoundment started in November 1942 and the first turbine started running in March 1943. After interruptions, the dam was not completed until 1953. The last turbine went into operation in 1959. The total capacity of the hydropower plant is 552.5 MW , with 166 MW guaranteed in continuous operation. The total annual energy production is 1890 GWh .
In addition to the main purpose of the dam for electricity generation, it also serves flood control, irrigation, public and industrial water supply, navigability, fishing, tourism and other purposes. On the same river further up there is also the Baishan Dam . Its catchment area of 19,000 km² is part of the total catchment area of 42,500 km².
The dam is part of the content to the greater of the Earth at about 11,000 million cubic meters. The exact content is given differently with 10,680, 10,780 or 11,460 million m³. The reservoir is narrow and elongated, about 180 km long and up to 10 km wide. Depending on the water level, its surface is up to 550 km². The greatest depth is 75 meters.
