On November 13, 2005, petrochemical plant No. 101 in Jilin , People's Republic of China, several explosions . The plant was owned by Jilin Petroleum and Chemical Company , a subsidiary of Petrochina . Five workers died in the chemical plant, dozen were injured and several thousand residents of the city had to be evacuated.

The Songhua River was badly contaminated with benzene and nitrobenzene . According to official information, about 100 tons of chemicals got into the river, which caused a poisonous carpet of 80 km.

On November 21, the drinking water in the Chinese metropolis of Harbin , which was drawn from the river, was turned off. On November 24th, the poison carpet reached the city of Harbin. In order to prevent a price increase, the city administration has frozen the prices for drinking water in the shops to the level of November 20th.

Russia was hit by the poisonous carpet in mid-December 2005, and the city of Khabarovsk was also affected .
