How Proust Can Change Your Life is a TV film about the creation and reception of the novel In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust . The basis for the film is the book "How Proust Can Change Your Life" by Alain de Botton .

content

The narrator of the film is Felicity Kendal. Alain de Botton's verbal contributions, in the form of short essays about Proust's family background, his friends, his stays in the salons, about his style or about Proust's views on the relationship between the author's biography and whose work speaks.

In the interspersed movie scenes, Ralph Fiennes plays the role of Marcel Proust: wrapped in a jacket, coat and blanket in bed while working on his novel, which is about to be completed, or while writing letters. Lily Bevan plays Proust's longtime housekeeper Céleste Albaret.

The film is supplemented with excerpts from old film documentation in black and white of theatrical performances that the narrator of the novel saw on the Parisian stages, with statements from friends and contemporaries, represented by actors, as well as reflections by Pierre Rosenberg or the writers Louis de Bernières and Doris Lessing on Proust and her Proust reading. Harold Nicolson e.g. B. remembers how Proust used to persistently question his interlocutors down to the smallest detail, Rosenberg talks about Proust's relationship to architecture, his engagement with Ruskin or his appreciation of Chardin's paintings.

production

The documentary was shot for BBC 2 . It was produced by Peter Bevan, who also directed it. A cameraman is not named in the credits. The piano pieces are played by Tansy Aked, who also wrote the arrangements.
