Simon Ward

Simon Ward (born October 16, 1941 in Beckenham , Kent , England , † July 20, 2012 in London , England) was a British actor .

Life

Simon Ward was born to Leonard Fox Ward, a car dealer, and Winifred Ward. He attended Alleyn's School in London. At the age of 15, he joined the cast of the National Youth Theater, located at Alleyn's School . He trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. In 1963 he made his stage actor debut at the Northampton Repertory Theater in the role of Fred Beenstock in the play Hobson's Choice by Harold Brighouse . A year later, in 1964, he made his West End debut at St. Martin's Theater in The Fourth of July . Over the next few years, Ward appeared in numerous theater productions on various British stages.

He played, among others, Constantine in The Seagull (Birmingham Repertory Theater 1964), the role of Abel Drugger in the play The Alchemist by Ben Jonson (Oxford Playhouse 1965) and Hippolyte in Phaedra (Oxford Playhouse, 1965). In 1966 he played Dennis in the world premiere of Joe Orton's play Beute at the Jeanette Cochrane Theater in Holborn . This was followed by: Ferdinand in William Shakespeare's late work Der Sturm (Chichester Festival Theater 1968), Romeo in Romeo and Juliet (Shaw Theater, London 1972) and Troilus in Troilus and Cressida (Young Vic Theater, London 1976).

Ward later took on theater roles in, among others, Neil Simon's comedic farce Rumors ... Rumors ( Rumors ) (1990) and in 1995 in Cell Mates by Simon Gray at the Albery Theater in London.

From the late 1960s, Ward also played roles in film and television , which led to a break in his theater career for several years. Ward made his cinema debut in 1969 as a young doctor in the horror film Frankenstein Must Die! by Terence Fisher . In the biopic The Young Lion by Richard Attenborough , he played the role of young Winston Churchill in 1972 . In the historical film Hitler - The Last Ten Days with Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft , he played a German lieutenant. Ward gained particular fame as the Duke of Buckingham in Richard Lester's costume films The Three Musketeers and the sequel The Four Musketeers - The Revenge of Milady . Ward stayed true to the genre of war films in 1976 in Battle in the Clouds . In the following years Ward was only sporadically to be seen on the big screen. He had cinema roles in Supergirl (1984) and in 1992 as Mr. Linton in Stormy Passion .

Ward also starred in several British television series . He took on several continuous series roles, recurring episode roles and guest roles. He played in the British television series A Taste of Death and Family Affairs , as well as in the mini-series Around the World in 80 Days with Pierce Brosnan . In recent years, Ward has appeared in the BBC crime series Judge John Deed and as Bishop Stephen Gardiner in The Tudors .

His daughter Sophie Ward is also an actress. Ward died after a long illness.
