Ilan and Esti Brunner

Disraeli (short for disabled Israelis dt. Maimed, disabled Israelis ) is a private initiative in 2002 by Ilan Brunner and his wife Esti in Tel Aviv was founded. The project is carried out by volunteers.

history

Ilan Brunner, born in Prague in 1934 , was one of the Jewish children who left Germany on a Kindertransport in 1939 , were sent to England and thus survived the Holocaust . After the Second World War he went to Israel and worked there for over 40 years as a press officer and photographer for the Israeli Defense Ministry .

During his service as army spokesman, Ilan Brunner was able to welcome numerous German visitors to Israel and thus came into contact with the new German generation, who were interested in Israel and the fate of Israeli soldiers. Intensive connections and friendships have been established through long-term relationships. This is how the idea was born to invite young Israelis who were wounded during their military service or by terrorist attacks to come to Germany to relax.

The project started in 1997 in Israel. There Horst-Klaus Hofmann , the founder of the Young Christians Offensive , and Pastor Wolfgang Breithaupt from Weitenhagen met Ilan Brunner on the occasion of an international reconciliation conference. In cooperation with Hofmann and the evangelical pastor Breithaupt and with the support of numerous donors, a stay in the summer of 2002 became possible: 18 young Israelis came with the Brunner couple to the church meeting center Haus der Stille (Friedrich-Wilhelm-Krummacher-Haus) in Weitenhagen. From then on, Disraeli's groups visited Weitenhagen and Reichelsheim / Odenwald every two years.

aims

The project has three main focuses: personal contacts, breaking down prejudices and understanding the situation in Israel. It should serve to promote understanding and friendship among Israelis and Christians of different nations. Young Israeli women and men between the ages of 18 and 28 who were wounded by terrorist attacks during their military service are given the opportunity to visit organizations and private individuals in Germany. By 2010, a total of more than 1,000 Israelis had been able to vacation abroad. They received invitations from groups and individuals from America , Great Britain , Germany , Switzerland and other countries.

For the Holocaust survivor Ilan Brunner, these relationships have a very special meaning: “They serve the realization of the idea of reconciliation between our peoples without forgetting the past. These relationships build bridges - piece by piece. "

activities

The project met with a strong response from Christians and communities. The first group came to the House of Silence in Weitenhagen in 2002 at the invitation of Pastor Wolfgang Breithaupt . In May 2003 a second group of 20 young Israelis visited the ecumenical community Offensive Young Christians eV (OJC) in Reichelsheim. In August 2004 nine employees of the OJC traveled to Israel to visit the Disraelis who had been guests in Reichelsheim in spring 2003 in order to continue the dialogue that had begun. In May 2006, 18 young Israelis were again on a 10-day visit to the OJC. In March 2007, OJC employees made another return visit to Israel. In the summer of 2007, OJC employees, together with Wolfgang and Elke Breithaupt from the House of Silence , invited Israeli “orphaned” married couples who had lost a child to Weitenhagen. In 2008, a group of 18 young Israelis came to Reichelsheim. In July 2010, the fourth visit by a group of young Israelis to the Young Christians offensive took place in Reichelsheim. On the occasion of one of the first group trips to Weitenhagen, the bishop of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church, Hans-Jürgen Abromeit , wrote a greeting.

In 2003, the Christian bridge-building and reconciliation service, Services in Israel , invited victims of terrorism from Israel to Hanover, who were guests of German families. In the early summer of 2005, 14 Disraelis came to Kassel in northern Hesse at the invitation of the Israel Today - Christians at the Side of Israel Association . The Christian association Ebenezer Aid Fund Germany eV , which has set itself the goal of promoting reconciliation and helping Jews return to Israel, was one of the project partners. At the invitation of the Christen an der Seiten Israels eV association , a group of Disraelis visited the Kassel region in May 2004. Church communities such as the Evangelical Church Community Werben / Niederlausitz and Christian associations such as the YMCA participated in the Disraelis project.

In addition, some cities and municipalities were project partners of Disraelis. In June 2007, 20 war disabled soldiers visited the town of Schönebeck in Saxony-Anhalt. They were housed with host families and at the YMCA. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Reichspogromnacht , Ilan Brunner gave a lecture at the Georg-August-Zinn School in Reichelsheim.

In July 2009, a meeting between 20 young Disraelis and members of the Hans Rosenthal Lodge eV took place in Berlin. Bundeswehr units, the German Ministry of Defense and the German Embassy in Israel also support the project. Many private individuals and families have also invited young Israelis since the beginning of the project.

On September 18, 2004, the MDR reported on the Disraelis project in its television program “Glaubhaftig” (author: Frieder Weigmann).

On April 19, 2014 Ilan Brunner celebrated his 80th birthday. The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Israel , Andreas Michaelis, personally congratulated him.

As part of the OJC Friends' Day "Day of the Offensive", Ilan Brunner received the ojcos Foundation Prize endowed with 3,000 euros on May 29, 2014 in Reichelsheim for his great commitment to the reconciliation between Jews and Germans.
