The First World War is almost over. Elizabeth lives in Baltimore and works for the Hamilton family chemical plant. Lawrence Hamilton is the company's managing director. At the end of the war, Elizabeth, who is pregnant, learns of her husband's death. She married Lawrence Hamilton and died shortly after marrying her son Drew. Drew never learns who his real father was. A seriously injured American soldier lies in a hospital in Austria. He is led by Dr. Ludwig treated. The soldier is John MacDonald, who has amnesia. Recovered, he takes on a new identity and calls himself Erich Kessler.
1939. The Second World War breaks out in Europe . Drew Hamilton is just finishing college. Like many young Americans, he and his friends want to go to war and fight the Nazis. Your plan is to go to Canada and join the Royal Canadian Air Force . Elizabeth is strictly against it. Now, of all times, the family receives a visit from the Austrian chemist Erich Kessler, who fled Austria from the Nazis with his daughter Margaret. In reality Margaret is the daughter of Dr. Ludwig, who was murdered by the Nazis together with his wife. Confronted with places in his own past, Kessler gets small flashes of memories. Elizabeth also recognizes similarities to her fallen first husband.
With his stories, Kessler provides Drew with further arguments for his will to fight against the Nazis. Contrary to the parents' permission, Drew sets off for Canada. Kessler, still suffering from the effects of his injury and a sick man, follows him and brings him back home. Kessler wants to let the past rest. He dies of a heart attack. Elizabeth can now focus on the future.

Irene Dunne was initially discussed for the leading role in the film adaptation of Gwen Bristow's novel Tomorrow is Forever . Claudette Colbert repeated her role twice in radio plays: in 1946 with Van Heflin for Lux Radio Theater and in 1950 with Jeff Chandler for Hallmark Playhouse . Natalie Wood played her first speaking role after appearing as an extra in another Irving Pichel film in 1943 .
