John Wengraf

John Wengraf (born April 23, 1897 in Vienna , † May 4, 1974 in Santa Barbara , California; actually Hans Wengraf ) was an Austrian actor .

Life

Wengraf received his training at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and made his debut at the Komödienhaus there in 1919. His other stage stations were Berlin , Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg . There he was active as a theater director at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus and the Thalia Theater . From 1931 to 1933 he was part of the ensemble of the Vienna Burgtheater . After the " Anschluss of Austria " he emigrated to Czechoslovakia in 1938 , after the German occupation of " remaining Czech Republic " in spring 1939 he fled from Prague to London . There he changed his first name from Hans to John and continued to play the theater.

At the beginning of the Second World War in 1939 he was the spokesman for the series The Austrian Voice in the context of the BBC foreign programs. In 1941 he moved to the USA. There he had several appearances on New York stages. Above all, however, Wengraf, who had worked in several silent films as early as 1922, now became a film actor. He first played Nazi villains in American films. After the war he was also seen as an emigrant or in the roles of fathers and common men. In 1951 he played the German ambassador Franz von Papen in The Cicero case , in the 1962 film Hitler he took on the role of Dr. Morell .
