Cameron Mitchell

Cameron Mitchell (born November 4, 1918 in Dallastown , Pennsylvania , † July 6, 1994 in Pacific Palisades , California ; actually Cameron McDowell Mitzell ) was an American actor .

Life

Mitchell grew up in poverty, one of seven children of a priest . During his school days he became interested in the theater; With borrowed money, Mitchell began working on the theater in New York in 1940. However, this was interrupted by World War II, where he served with the United States Army Air Forces as a bombardier on a North American B-25 . After many unsuccessful applications, he received his first small film role in 1945 through the mediation of Alfred Lunt and agent Lynn Fontanne, who also changed his last name slightly. On Broadway , he successfully starred alongside Lee J. Cobb in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman , directed by Elia Kazan . He was also cast in the later film adaptation of the play.

He played his best-known role for the German audience in the western series High Chaparral as Uncle Buck . As early as the early 1960s, when he had been playing almost exclusively in B-films in Hollywood for a long time , Mitchell had gone to Europe and made numerous genre films; towards the end of his career for around 240 film and television productions, he was often seen in horror and action films.

Mitchell died of lung cancer on July 6, 1994 at the age of 75 in Pacific Palisades, California. He is buried in Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, California.
