Life

Downs first worked as a model before getting a film deal with 20th Century Fox in 1944 . The following year, she had uncredited supporting roles in three feature films, including the Oscar- winning film musical Love Fair and the Oscar-nominated film Dolly Sisters . In 1946 she cast John Ford for the female lead in his western Faustrecht of the Prairie and preferred her to Jeanne Crain . This should remain the high point of her career.

The following year she starred in the B-movie For You I Die and starred in the 1948 western The Avengers of Texas , Blake Edwards ' first film as a screenwriter and one of his last as an actor. This was followed by some more Western, including the Abbott and Costello - Comedy knitting at the neck . In 1951 she played alongside Joe Kirkwood Jr. in Joe Palooka in Triple Cross , and the two married the following year. In 1954 they were seen together in the television series The Joe Palooka Story , of which 25 episodes emerged.

In 1955 they were divorced and married Robert Brunson the following year. Downs had been mostly on television since 1952 and was trying to get back into the movie business. However, she only got roles in B-movies like Roger Corman's western One Shot Faster and the horror films Creature of Terror and The Colossus . She had her last feature film appearance in 1958 in Bestie des Horen . This was followed by more sporadic television appearances, including in A Thousand Miles of Dust and Perry Mason .

In 1963 their second marriage also ended in divorce. From the mid-1960s onwards there were no offers and Downs was unemployed for several years. When her ex-husband Joe Kirkwood Jr. found out about her precarious financial situation in 1976 and wanted to support her financially, she had already succumbed to cancer .
