history

Oberharmersbach was first mentioned in 1139 on a document under the name Hademarsbach .

The place is part of the formerly free empire valley Harmersbach and was therefore directly subordinate to the emperor. The Harmersbachtal was the only empire-free valley, besides the imperial cities, in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. A separate jurisdiction, with Vogt and Twelve Council, ensured order and justice. The council met in the Gasthaus zur Stube in the council chamber that still exists today. In 1902, the town hall was completed not far from the parlor. A gallows once stood on today's Galgenmatt as a symbol of its own jurisdiction. The Reichstal Harmersbach extended over the communities of Unter- and Oberharmersbach. Today Unterharmersbach belongs to the city of Zell a. H. In 1803 the Grand Duchy of Baden was founded, to which the valley belonged from then on.

The municipal coat of arms shows St. Gallus with the bear who, according to legend, should have been in the valley.

The parish church of St. Gallus was built in 1839 from local red sandstone in the neo-Romanesque style. It is one of the largest churches in the Archdiocese of Freiburg. Oberharmersbach used to belong to the Wolfach district . When it was dissolved in 1973, the place became part of the new Ortenau district .

In 1990 the first AIDS hospital "Maria Frieden" was opened in Germany in Oberharmersbach. It was closed again in June 2017 for financial reasons.

Religions

The community is still dominated by Roman Catholicism , although the surrounding area was more strongly influenced by the Reformation . The Maria-Hilf chapel in Zuwald also belongs to the parish church of St. Gallus.
