The municipality of Steinach with the formerly independent municipality of Welschensteinach includes 25 villages, hamlets, Zinken, farms and houses. The village of Steinach, the hamlets of Bocksbach, Hinterbach, Lachen, Niederbach, Oberbach, Sarach, Schwenden and Stricker (courtyards), the district of Krafzig, the Zinken Einet, the courtyards of Bolinsberg (Bellisberg), Dochbach belong to the municipality of Steinach within the boundaries of 1971 (Middle, Upper and Lower), Runzengraben and Wanglig and the residential areas Artenberg, Eichlesmatt, Großmatt and Im Leh. The villages of Obertal and Untertal and the farms Birlinsbach, Klettner, Langbrunnen and Mühlsbach belong to the former municipality of Welschensteinach.

Feutschenberg, Haldenberg and Silberhof are located in the Steinach part of the municipality , and the Schnait farm is now part of Steinach.

history

Early history

Steinach was first mentioned in 1139 in a document from Pope Innocent II, in which the Pope confirmed the possession of Steinach to Gengenbach Monastery . In 1280 the place came under the rule of the Lords of Geroldseck . The Gengenbach Monastery took over the manorial rule in 1380, but from 1423 had to hand over the rule to the Lords of Fürstenberg in parts .

Administrative history

In 1806, Steinach fell to the Grand Duchy of Baden as part of the mediatization due to the Reichsdeputation Hauptschluss . There it has long been part of the Wolfach district , which in 1973 was merged into the new Ortenau district .

Incorporations

On February 1, 1972, the previously independent community of Welschensteinach was incorporated into Steinach.

Religions

The Reformation was introduced in 1541 by Count Wilhelm zu Fürstenberg, in 1549 Steinach became Catholic again under his brother, and to this day the place is still predominantly Roman Catholic . There is a Catholic church in each of the two districts. The few evangelical believers receive spiritual care from Haslach in the Kinzig valley .

Steinach is located on the Großer Hansjakobweg , a hiking trail that leads past many sights.

Museums

The local and small distillery museum is located on Adlerplatz in the center of the village in a former farm building and old dance floor of the Gasthaus Zum Adler.

Cultural associations include the music association "Harmonie" Steinach, founded in 1881, and the singing association "Eintracht" Steinach, which has existed since 1860. In Welschensteinach there is the music band Welschensteinach and the choral society "Liederkranz".

Buildings

The most important building in Steinach in terms of art history is the parish church of the Holy Cross (patronage September 14th). It was built in 1750/51 on behalf of the Prince of Fürstenberg by the then Fürstenberg master builder Franz Joseph Salzmann . Parts of the foundations of the medieval church, which were largely removed during the new construction, are located in the area of ​​today's church tower. Above it, in the area of ​​the sacristy, the old choir with fragments of old frescoes has been preserved. The furnishings in the Rococo style were largely carried out until 1778, but were repeatedly subject to restrictions due to savings on the part of the princely hand. In 1889 the nave was extended.

Steinach is close to the federal highway 33 , which has been running outside the town for some time, which connects it to the southeast via the Black Forest with Villingen-Schwenningen , Donaueschingen and the Lake Constance region.
