history
Local history
Berghaupten was first mentioned in a document in 1277. In the following centuries, the history of the place was closely linked to the Lords of Hohengeroldseck until the family died out in 1634. There followed a period of disputes between Austria and the Bishop of Strasbourg . In 1697 the village was sold to the Barons von Schleys.
To the south of the village there was once the now-defunct Berghaupten Castle , while there was an aristocratic country estate in the village, the owners of which changed frequently and which had already been converted into a moated castle by the time the barons of Schleiß bought the place. The barons later had the dilapidated moated castle demolished and erected a new building in its place, which came into the possession of the municipality in 1831, which initially used it as a school house before the building was used as the town hall today.
From 1755 to the mid-1920s, mining was carried out in Berghaupten . Was funded coal of excellent quality. However, the mine constantly struggled with the water that was falling in in large quantities, so that extraction was never particularly economical.
