The former municipality of Waldulm includes the Zinken Blaubronn-Zinsel, Oberberg, Schwend, Tal, Unterberg and Weiher, houses and farms Pfaffenbach and Ziegelhöfe and the town of Winterbürg. Today Kappelrodeck has two attractive building areas, the "Schloßacker" building area in the Kappelrodeck district and the "Dorfbündt" building area in Waldulm.

history

The first written mention as A Capelle apud Rodecke comes from the year 1349; Waldulm was already mentioned 100 years earlier (1244). The name "Capelle prope Rodecke" dates from 1587, and over the years the name "Cappel unter Rodeck" followed. Finally, the name "Obercappell" was used to avoid confusion with "Unterkappel" (today Kappelwindeck, city of Bühl ).

In 1316 Kappelrodeck moved from the Ortenauer Reichsland to the rulership and jurisdiction of Prince-Bishop Johann I of Strasbourg .

Due to the narrowness of the valley, people were relocated to more spacious areas; the districts Bernhardshöfe, Heidenhöfe, Ottenberg, Iberg, Steinebach and individual courtyards such as B. Wholeck or Wolfersberg.

Most of the residents, however, settled around the eponymous chapel. The chapel formed the center of the village and, thanks to its slightly elevated location, offered protection from high water and inundation. The bridge over the Acher also led here, which had to be crossed to get to the rear Achertal. However, the bridge was often flooded due to flooding during heavy rains or snowmelt, which sometimes meant long waiting times.

Many noble families had their seat in Kappelrodeck and the surrounding area, such as the Count Palatine and Margrave of Baden, the Eberstein and Staufenburg dynasties and the nobles of Bach, Bosenstein and Rodeck. In addition, some monasteries such as the nearby All Saints' Day or the more distant St. Georgen owned properties in the region.

Kappelrodeck was one of the six judicial districts. The administration of justice was exercised by the sovereign mayor or a staff holder with jury proposed by the court and confirmed by the office (court twelve). The “Kappler” court was the largest of the six areas and included the Kappel area “on the way near Rodeck”, the Rotten Bernhardshöfe and Steinebach, Am Bach and Furschenbach, the Rotten Grimmerswald and Seebach at the foot of the Hornisgrinde, Ottenhöfen and Hagenbruck, the village Waldulm and the Rotten in the valley and on the mountain as well as the Rotten to the left and right of the special water. It included all the farms and hamlets in Atzel-, Heiden-, Wolfers-, Simmers- and Lauenbach as well as the mountain and valley areas on the other side of the Acher up to the Hornisgrinde . There were three courts in this: the manorial or Hubengericht and communal or peasant court as well as the sovereign or public court, also called regional court. The first two dealt mainly with the field of agriculture and cattle breeding and performed the tasks of the village, field and forest police.

Death sentences were carried out on the boundary in the Galgenfeld area. Later executions took place in the Herrenmatte, today's fairground.

Kappelrodeck was a well-known market town with connections to Achern and Sasbach and other places along the "Ortenauer Bergstrasse" (today's B 3 ).

In 1601 a severe earthquake shook the region, followed by the Thirty Years War with passages, billeting, war contributions and ransom, robbery and looting. At the end of the war the Oberkirch office, to which Kappelrodeck was subordinate, was pledged to Württemberg and bought back by the Strasbourg bishop in 1663.

The second half of the century was marked by the wars of Louis XIV , the devastation and effects of which were sometimes worse than the previous Thirty Years War.

There were major floods in 1716 and 1778. The French Revolution of 1789 also made itself felt in the Achertal. Specifically, a French soldier was shot in 1799, which should lead to a confrontation with the French soldiers. With the support of the Austrian Blankensteiner Hussars and the infantry under the leadership of Count Hardeck, the whole day gathered at “Birkköpfl” to receive the advancing French army. A targeted shooting of the French officer by a sniper relaxed the situation and the French armed forces withdrew. Guards and lookouts at the "Bienenbuckel" provided early warning of a new danger from the French armed forces. After the alarm signal, the gun-capable residents gathered in the upper village on the “Ladstatt”, where the guns were loaded, and then rushed straight to the threatened location. The "Frankfurter Reichs-Ober-Post-Amts-Zeitung" even reported on an operation on June 8, 1799: "On May 21, 1799, early after 8 o'clock, the French advanced against 3,000 men with 3 cannons against the Oberkappeltal. Just 3 platoons of Blankenstein Hussars under Rittmeister Illesy and a company from the Gradiskan Battalion keep the enemy busy until Baron Leopold von Neuenstein and Lorenz Winter, ox host von Kappel, brought together the people of Kapplertal who were busy with agricultural work and then jointly with the imperial military against the Enemy fought. At 4 o'clock in the afternoon they put the same to the ground, with the loss of 400 dead and wounded, while the former themselves only lost 19 men and 23 horses. The French burned 5 day laborer's houses, 2 barns and a mill on their retreat to Waldulm ”. The acts of war lasted from spring 1799 until summer 1799.

With the reorganization in 1803, Kappelrodeck changed from the episcopal-Strasbourg rule to the ruling house of Baden. The place now experienced quieter times, which resulted in an increase in the number of inhabitants. The first clubs were also founded in these years.

During a flood in 1824, a wooden bridge connecting the Löwen inn with a house opposite was washed away. The innkeeper and his wife were also killed here. There were further floods in 1938 and 1947, especially in the area of today's “Venice” street.

Mechanization, industrialization and rail connection in 1898 ushered in the 20th century. Kappelrodeck was spared from both world wars due to external influences.

In the course of the community reform, Waldulm was incorporated into the community of Kappelrodeck on January 1, 1974. In 1994 Waldulm celebrated its 750th anniversary and in 1999 Kappelrodeck celebrated its 650th anniversary. In the same year, the bypass road that had been sought for decades for the community and the local development was opened to traffic.

Religions

Since the Reformation passed Kappelrodeck by, the place is still predominantly Roman Catholic today. There are Catholic parishes in both the main town and Waldulm. In the meantime, however, there is also a Protestant church.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In red a silver sloping beam, inside a black-pedested, roofed and windowed, red church in side view with a tower attached to the front with a kneaded lantern".

Declaration of coat of arms: Kappelrodeck has a talking coat of arms similar to the coat of arms of the city of Bühl or the former municipality of Gamshurst (today belongs to Achern). The chapel standing in a diagonal right-hand beam creates a direct reference to the original place name "Cappel unter Rodeck". The silver sloping beam is intended to indicate that it has belonged to the diocese of Strasbourg for centuries. When applying for a new official stamp in December 1900, the chapel was to be replaced by a pure color composition, which the local council at the time prevented. A satisfactory solution was not found until 1955. It is now a combination of the coat of arms of the diocese of Strasbourg with the chapel (silver sloping beam on a red background with chapel). This coat of arms has been used in Kappelrodeck ever since and also adorns the town hall.
