history

The red wine village of Waldulm can look back on a long historical past, which probably began in the eighth or ninth century. Waldulm was first mentioned in a document as "universitas de walulma" on July 29, 1244, when the Metropolitan Court of Mainz had to decide in a dispute between the community and the Allerheiligen monastery over a piece of forest and enclosed goods. For centuries the Waldulm parish motto of 1507 formed the basis of coexistence in the community. This laid down the rights and duties of superiors and subjects. The sole sovereign was the respective bishop of Strasbourg. Wars, witchcraft and times of need repeatedly led to a sharp decline in the population. There were also numerous emigrations in bad economic times.

At this time the place belonged to the secular sovereignty of the bishopric of Strasbourg . Waldulm remained under this rule until 1803, when it became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden . As part of the community reform , Waldulm was incorporated into the neighboring community of Kappelrodeck on January 1, 1974 .

Culture and sights

Local anthem

O Waldulm, you red wine village, scattered on the edge of the mountain, As a wine and sing-happy spot you have always been known. Your dark forests rustling, your fir trees eternally green, I want to listen to your springs, When vines and chestnuts bloom.

Greetings from distant towers, castle and church on the heights, your brooks flow cheerfully, wonderful to see this picture! On the Schwend the stone blocks breaks the hardworking hand of the stonemason, peasant blood flows in the veins of the people, loyal to the homeland.

When the cherries bloom in springtime The valley is like paradise, When the farmer's efforts are rewarded: Fruit and grapes are honey-sweet. When a good autumn brings red wine into the barrel, When the must ferments noisily, Can the winemaker be more beautiful?

When real noble brandy flows from the fermented matter, When the hardworking distiller's hope and good wages sweeten the effort. Russia praises vodka, England praises its whiskey, The crown of all spirits deserves the Waldulm cherry spirit.

God keep us peace After such a long time of suffering, give people consolation down below, happiness and contentment. Bless hard work and noble striving, Already the land before a heavy storm, Good God, protect our vines, Our red wine village Waldulm.

Buildings and sights

High altar of the St. Albinkirche in Waldulm
  • The so-called Kutzenstein , a pile of stones in the forest of Waldulm. The legend passed on from generation to generation about this pile of stones says the following:
When the Waldulmians built their church a long time ago, which was one of the first in the district, the devil, who saw himself disturbed in his property, was so angry with this work that he tried with all his might to destroy it again. But all of his lists failed. In his blind rage he finally took hold of an enormous boulder with his giant fingers and carried it from a great distance to destroy the hated building with one blow. When he had reached the ridge and was about to throw it, a higher power, which was watching over the church, forced him to drop the stone. From then on the devil gave up his fruitless attempts at destruction. The holes in the boulder, however, stem from the devil's claws, which is why these depressions are called "devil's fingers".
Today it is 327  m above sea level. NN located Kutzenstein a hiking destination for locals as well as for tourists. An iron ladder leads up the approximately seven-meter-high cairn, via which it is possible to reach a small viewing platform.
  • Church of St. Albin in Waldulm. The church was renovated in 1888 and in 1965–71 and 2003–04 by the Freiburg restorer Andreas Bauernfeind . The parish of Waldulm was first mentioned in a document on July 6, 1291. In 1487 the old choir tower church was built and the current parish church has stood in its place since 1888.
