The Church of St. Nikolaus in Kappelrodeck

The church of St. Nikolaus in Kappelrodeck (also known locally as "Achertäler Dom") is the Roman Catholic parish church of Kappelrodeck ( Ortenaukreis , Mittelbaden ).

history

Already in the 11th century there was a small chapel near the bridge over the Acher , which was dedicated to St. Nicholas . The name of the place Kappelrodeck goes back to this small chapel. It is not known exactly who built this chapel; It is assumed that the knights of Calw, who ran the Fronhof, later the Georgenhof, built the chapel.

The chapel and the religious members belonged to the parish of St. Stephan in Oberachern .

In 1318 the Bishop of Strasbourg bought the Georgenhof with all rights and obligations such as jurisdiction, compulsory and ban law. Until the reorganization in 1803, the Kapplertal was under the rule of the bishopric of Strasbourg .

Since the Oberachern parish had large increases in the number of people and catchment area, the citizens of Kappl wanted their own parish. Konrad Munhard, pastor of Friesenheim , donated priestly and altar pledges in 1387 and furnished the Kappelrodeck chapel with the consent of the bishop "with interest and goods from goods in Kappel, Achern, Sasbach, Önsbach, Fautenbach, Renchen and Oberkirch". Munhard was chaplain of the chapel and responsible for pastoral care until his death in 1395. After the chaplain's death, Kappelrodeck belonged again to the parish of St. Stephan Oberachern.

It was not until July 2, 1447 that the chapel was elevated to the parish church of St. Nicholas, the first priest was Wenzeslaus Fabry von Lichtenberge. In 1472 a new church was built to replace the chapel that had become too small. The church was donated by Pastor Konrad Hund, who belonged to the Hund von Bernshofen family.

A fire in 1570 almost completely destroyed the church and the associated rectory. The parish in Waldulm then took care of the community. Only in 1609 was there a pastor again in Kappelrodeck. The burnt down church was only poorly repaired. So there was only a silver chalice, but no eternal light, no monstrance or ciborium. Since the relics had broken out of the altars, a new altar stone had to be obtained.

The church was not rebuilt until 140 years after the fire. In 1712 the church tower and the nave were renewed and enlarged. During a church visit in 1761, a new church was ordered.

The church had four bells at that time, the oldest bell was from 1570. A stone cross of the Jesuit mission was erected on the north side of the church in 1773. The cemetery around the church was enlarged in 1767 and 1779. In 1767 there was an extension of the church with an upstairs church. The church was known as a pilgrimage church with an emergency altar and a painting of the emergency helpers. In 1776 the church was renewed. The new building was ordered 140 years after the church visitation.

In 1821 the parish was divided and a separate parish was set up in Ottenhöfen . In 1902 the new construction of the parish church in neo-Gothic style began under the direction of Johannes Schroth from the Archbishop's Building Office in Karlsruhe. Since the old parish church had to be demolished for the new building, an emergency church was set up in the "Kranzsaal" from 1902 to 1904.

On November 17, 1903, the foundation stone was laid with a celebratory speech by Prelate Franz Xaver Lender . In the autumn of 1904, the Holy of Holies was brought into the new church in a solemn procession. In 1906 the high altar was set up by Franz Joseph Simmler . In 1906 a new bell was installed. The interior work was completed in 1907, so that on May 9, 1907, the church was ceremoniously consecrated by Archbishop Thomas Nörber .

The new bells had to be removed for use in the First World War. New bells were installed in 1929. These had to be removed again in the course of the Second World War in 1942. In 1948 the third bell could be installed, which can still be found in the church today.

The unsuitable organ bought second-hand in 1905 was replaced in 1963/64 by a suitable organ with 44 registers. In 1977 an interior and exterior renovation was carried out.

In 2008 the parish church of St. Nikolaus was renovated inside. The sanctuary was in 2010 by the artist Jochen Kitzbihler newly designed .
