history

Schutterwald was first mentioned in a document in 1268 . There were frequently changing rulers until the place finally came to the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806 . Whereby the interest of the ruling families of that time was less in the village than in the forest, with its abundance of wood, pasture and tithe rights. Over the centuries until today, Schutterwald has been a popular tourist destination.

At the end of the 19th century, when the textile and glass industry settled in nearby Offenburg, there were also new ways of earning a living for Schutterwald farmers. In Baden, Schutterwald was part of the Offenburg district for a long time , with which it merged in 1973 in the new Ortenau district. Today Schutterwald is a workers' and employee housing estate, offers a variety of jobs in the village in two large industrial areas and the inter-communal industrial area H3. Agriculture is run by four families. The focus is on livestock farming, fruit and special crops (strawberries etc.) and corn cultivation. Leisure activities in more than 60 sporty and culturally oriented clubs are possible in a large forest stadium and in two sports and multi-purpose halls.

Religions

As early as 1316 there is evidence of a parish church for Schutterwald that belonged to the diocese of Strasbourg . Since the Reformation passed Schutterwald, the community is still predominantly Roman Catholic today. In addition to the Catholic community, which has two churches, including the stately St. Jakobus Church, which towers above the town center and is visible from afar , there has also been a Protestant community since 1995, after the Protestants, previously in the diaspora, had been cared for from Offenburg . The Austrian Empress Maria Theresa is said to have stayed overnight in the church of St. Jakobus on her transit with her equipage. The St. Jakobuskirche was built in 1784 by Joseph Hirschbühl, a member of the Vorarlberg master builder family.
