Georg Schöner (pastor)

Georg Schöner (also George Schoener; born March 21, 1864 in Steinach , Grand Duchy of Baden ; † October 2, 1941 in Santa Clara , California ) was a Roman Catholic pastor of German descent who was known as the "rose pastor " (Padre of the Roses) . Two of his breeds still exist today: Arrillaga and Schoener's Nutkana .

Schöne immigrated to the United States in 1890 and was ordained a priest in 1892. He worked in parishes in Pennsylvania, in Rochester (Ohio) and from 1911 in Brooks (Oregon) , where he began growing roses. From 1917 to 1939 he worked in Santa Barbara (California) and at the age of 75 he moved to the Jesuit University of Santa Clara (California), where he died two years later. Around 1936 he bred the "black rose" with the name "Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes".

The Georg-Schöner School in Steinach is named after him.
