Ernst Paul

Ernst Paul (born April 27, 1897 in Steinsdorf (Northern Bohemia) , † June 11, 1978 in Gallspach ) was a German SPD politician .

Life and work

After attending elementary school, Paul initially worked as a farm worker. He then worked from home in the textile industry before completing an apprenticeship as a typesetter. Since 1912 he was a member of the Association of Young Workers Austria . From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a soldier . After the war he was editor of the magazine Social Democrat in Prague . After the occupation of the Sudetenland by Germany, he fled to Sweden in 1938 . From there he campaigned against the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia and organized relief operations for those who were expelled from their homeland .

Paul left his exile in Sweden in 1948 and settled in Esslingen am Neckar . From 1949 to 1952 he was editor-in-chief of the Allgemeine Zeitung in Stuttgart. The Ernst and Gisela Paul Foundation was established from his estate, which financially supports research on the Sudeten German labor movement.

Political party

In 1918 Paul joined the German Social Democratic Workers' Party in Czechoslovakia (DSAP) and was chairman of the Social Democratic Youth Association from 1919 to 1926.

After moving from Sweden to Germany, Paul joined the SPD. For a time he was federal chairman of the Seliger community (community of Sudeten German Social Democrats) and head of the Seliger archive.

MP

Paul was a member of the German Bundestag from the first general election in 1949 to 1969 and was always elected from the state list of his party in Baden-Württemberg (1949 still Württemberg-Baden ). In parliament he was, among other things, defense policy spokesman for his parliamentary group. During the deliberations on the establishment of the Bundeswehr, Paul spoke out in favor of creating the office of the Armed Forces Commissioner based on the example of the Swedish military ombudsman and was finally able to get his way with this demand. He was also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe , in which he headed the Committee on Population and Refugees from 1958 to 1966. From 1953 to 1973 he was a member of the district council of the Esslingen district .
