Night splint

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The night splint is an orthosis consisting of a leg splint with fixing devices and a foot part. They are available with and without a joint or joint lever. There is a leather strap on this articulated lever. The latter is already used for more severe malpositions of the knee joint. According to the three forces principle , malpositions of the knee joints are to be corrected in small children. At this age, there is the greatest chance of success in correcting such misalignments because the joints are not yet completely stable. As a rule, they are no longer used in later children and adolescents because the joints are strengthened to such an extent that their use has little chance of success. In addition to the three forces principle, the growth itself is used here to correct the deformities. Mostly bow-leg or knock-knees are treated in this way. Abnormal twisting of the leg can also be treated this way. Some night splints are cup-shaped and cover the entire leg. Plastics are used here. For this orthosis, the loading and unloading points must first be specially worked out on the plaster model. The orthopedic technician builds these orthoses according to a doctor's prescription.
