In medicine , leg splint describes a splint for positioning and immobilizing an injured or operated leg. If the rail is used to immobilize an injured leg during transport, it is also referred to as a transport rail .

Greaves are available as rigid metal rails, such as aluminum upholstered rails , vacuum rails that become stiff through air suction, or as pneumatic rails that are inflatable.

Various orthoses are colloquially referred to as leg splints, such as the Thomas splint or the Mainz orthosis .
