Air chamber rail

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Airwalker or pneumatic lower leg orthosis is used in the rescue service , similar to vacuum splint material , to stabilize broken extremities . There are different sizes for arms and legs.

The air chamber rail works similarly to an air mattress . In the basic state it is not inflated and can therefore be placed around the extremity to be stabilized. As soon as it is in the right position, it is inflated and becomes firm and stable due to the air pressure building up inside the splint.

Open fractures preclude the use of the air splint until they have been reduced, as it puts pressure on the injury caused by the protruding bone ends. Because of the differences between ambient and internal pressure, they are not suitable for air transport when filled with air.

The predecessor of the air chamber rail was the field transport rail .
