action

Allison Jones has broken up with her boyfriend Sam because he apparently cannot choose between her and his ex-wife. So that she is not so lonely in her large apartment, she looks for a roommate through a newspaper advertisement. Several young women contact her, including the shy Hedra Carlson, who immediately makes a likeable impression on Allison. Allison takes Hedra into her apartment, and that becomes her undoing. A cordial relationship initially develops between the two women. Hedra, however, apparently sees Allison as a replacement for her deceased twin sister, whose death she has not yet processed properly because she believes that she is to blame for it. This is noticeable by the fact that Hedra takes on Allison's appearance through clothes and hairstyle and is gripped by a pathological jealousy when she learns that Allison and Sam have made up again.

Hedra tries by all means to break Allison and Sam apart again to win Allison over. She lies in wait for Sam in a hotel room, surprises him in his sleep and takes advantage of the fact that she looks very similar to Allison in order to pretend to be this and to seduce Sam. Before Sam realizes that he's not looking at Allison, there is sexual activity. Hedra tries to blackmail Sam and demands that he break up with Allison, otherwise she will tell her what just happened. Sam decides to call Allison right away to tell her everything herself. Thereupon Hedra becomes enraged and a scuffle ensues. In the course of this, she rams the pointed heel of her shoe through the eye of Sam into the brain and fatally injures him.

Allison had noticed Hedra's abnormal behavior for a while. When she learns how Sam was killed and discovered Hedra's bloodied shoe in the bathroom, she immediately realized that Hedra killed Sam. But she can no longer escape her because Hedra has got herself a firearm and threatens her with it. Allison uses a trick to flee into the boiler room, where Hedra continues to attack her. However, Allison fights back with the courage of desperation and kills Hedra in self-defense .

Reviews

Roger Ebert praised the direction, the performance of the leading actresses and "the slowly increasing madness" of the film.

"Fader psychological thriller, which, despite the good cast and camera work, is staged too transparently to generate even a minimum of tension."

“WG terror at its best - oppressive and extremely exciting staged by Barbet Schroeder. Conclusion: The horror lives in sublet: captivating! "

“Barbet Schroeder (' The Affair of Sunny von B. ') achieved a real feat with his precise high-voltage thriller: He staged the millimeter-accurate psychogram of a mental illness and a suspense aria at the same time, without ever being speculative. [...] Jennifer Jason Leigh (' Last Exit Brooklyn ') and Bridget Fonda (' The Godfather 3 ') are allowed to exhaust their roles to the last. The claustrophobic tracking shots through a New York apartment building add to the oppressive atmosphere of the hit movie. "

- Video Week

“A brilliantly staged and convincingly played psychological thriller by the former documentary filmmaker and producer Barbet Schroeder, which cleverly combines psychological depth with gripping entertainment. [...] Leigh's portrayal of the mad psychopath Hedra Carlson gets under your skin in particular. "
