The city of Lom consists of the districts Lom (Bruch) and Loučná (Charge) . Basic settlement units are Horní Lom, Lom and Loučná. The municipality is divided into the cadastral districts of Lom U Mostu and Loučná u Lomu.
The village was founded around the end of the 12th century. However, excavations from the Neolithic period and the era of settlement by Celts have also been found . The name was derived from the German Bruche. It was founded by the then strong family of the Hrabischitz from Ossegg . Like many places in the area, it came under the dominion of the Ossegger monastery in the 14th century . Originally the village was mainly used for agriculture. In the 16th century, deposits of iron ore were found nearby, and lignite mining began in the early 17th century. In 1902 Lom was made a city.
