Jakob Stadler

Jakob Stadler (born October 15, 1808 in Nuremberg , † 1873 in Konstanz ) was a German printer and local politician . He was mayor of Konstanz from 1861 to 1866.

Life

Jakob Stadler came to Constance at the age of 23. As a journeyman in the book printing company, he was employed by printer owner Josef Meinrad Bannhard in 1831 as a book printer in the Bannhard printing house in Constance. In 1836 he married Josephine, the eldest daughter of the Bannhard family, became managing director of the Stadler printing and publishing house and was granted citizenship in Constance. In 1844 he acquired the Glükher printing company and started his own business; In 1846 he took over his father-in-law's company and founded J. Stadler'sche Buchdruckerei . In the following years he acquired the JE Stadersche Buchdruckerei in Konstanz and the Belle-Vue printing company in Kreuzlingen . He tried several times (unsuccessfully) to publish a newspaper, the “Seeblätter” (1844), “Bodenseezeitung” (1864) and “Konstanzer Volksfreund” (1969). In 1873 he handed the company over to his eldest son Paul Friedrich (* 1840).

In 1834 he became a member of the “Citizens Museum”, a gathering of the liberal business and educated middle class in Constance. In 1845 he became a member of the Konstanz municipal council. From 1849 to 1857 Stadler was provisional mayor. In 1861 he was elected mayor of Constance and held the office until his resignation in 1866. He was the last honorary mayor of Konstanz.

He is the namesake of Jakob-Stadler-Platz in Konstanz.
