The Soverato – Chiaravalle Centrale railway was a single-track, narrow - gauge railway in Calabria . The route led from Soverato on the Taranto – Reggio di Calabria route for 22.9 km to Chiaravalle Centrale . It was opened in 1923 and closed in 1969.

history

The original project of the Mediterranea-Calabro-Lucane (MCL) planned to connect Soverato via Chiaravalle Centrale and Rosarno with Mileto and thus with the railway line Vibo Marina-Mileto . This would have created a continuous connection from the Ionian to the Tyrrhenian Sea. In addition to passenger traffic, this connection was primarily intended to bring wood from the Calabrian mountains to the coast. The line to Chiaravalle Centrale was opened on December 15, 1923; the sequel was never built. In 1969, rail traffic was stopped and replaced by a bus line.

business

The line was operated by the MCL until 1963, then by Ferrovie Calabro Lucane (FCL). Steam locomotives were initially used, then mainly type MCL M1 rail buses .
