Margherita Isnardi Parente

Margherita Isnardi Parente (born October 4, 1928 in Catanzaro , † November 16, 2008 in Rome ) was an Italian philosopher and university lecturer with a focus on the history of ancient philosophy.

Life

Isnardi Parente studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa as well as at the Sorbonne in Paris and the University of Göttingen . Since 1965 she taught first at the University of Cagliari and from 1974 at the University of La Sapienza in Rome. Since 1993 she has been a corresponding member of the Italian National Academy Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei .

Works

Isnardi Parente has presented numerous studies on ancient philosophy, particularly on Plato , ancient Platonism and Neoplatonism . She has published new editions of the fragmentary writings of the pupils of Plato, Speusippus and Xenocrates , as well as the works of Epicurus and individual writings by Plotinus . Within Plato's research, it emerged through a critical examination of the interpretative approach of an " unwritten teaching " in Plato. In doing so, she presented a new edition of Plato's letters (2002) and, as part of the Academia Nazionale dei Lincei's academy treatises, critically edited the ancient documents on Plato's unwritten teachings ( Testimonia Platonica. Per una raccolta delle principali testimonianze sui 'legomena agrapha dogmata' di Platone , 1997-1998). Furthermore, she has dealt with the political theory of modern times (including Jean Bodin and Erasmus von Rotterdam ).

Biographical reflections is contained in her last book I mei Maestri ( My Teachers ), which was published in 2003 in the series of the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Storici in Naples. It contains memories of her father Giuseppe Isnardi and of her academic teachers Guido Calogero , Mario Untersteiner , Rodolfo Mondolfo , Arnaldo Momigliano , Harold Cherniss and others. a.
