Mario Untersteiner

Mario Untersteiner (born August 2, 1899 in Rovereto ; † August 6, 1981 in Milan ) was an Italian classical philologist , Graecist and historian of philosophy .

Untersteiner, who lost his father at the age of four, began his education in Rovereto, which at that time belonged to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy . From 1909 he first visited the Imperial Regio Ginnasio di Rovereto , but moved with his irredentist family to Milan on May 15, 1915, where he finally finished his schooling. On this he referred the University of Milan , where he acquired the laureate on July 1, 1920 with a thesis on Aeschylus .

He then worked from 1926 as a teacher at the Liceo Ginnasio Giovanni Berchet in Milan until 1947, when he was temporarily rector, as he was the only teacher of the Liceo who was not a member of the National Fascist Party . Then he devoted himself to his academic career. From 1947 on he taught Greek literature as a full professor at the University of Genoa and from 1958 on the history of ancient philosophy at the University of Milan. After he had finished the academic year 1968/1969, he withdrew from teaching. He voluntarily renounced the opportunity to continue teaching until he was 75, although this option would have been open to him due to his status as a lecturer, who had never belonged to the National Fascist Party.

Untersteiner worked in the field of Greek literature on the origin and nature of Greek comedy and Greek tragedy , in particular on the tragedians Sophocles and Aeschylus, on whom he wrote critical editions, commentaries and interpretations, on Herodotus and the Greek religion . In the field of ancient philosophy, he published a collection of the fragments of the sophists and works on Parmenides , Zeno de Elea , Xenophanes , Plato and Aristotle .
