Ulrich Christian “Ueli” Berger (born May 7, 1937 in Bern ; † November 8, 2008 there) was a Swiss artist , product designer , interior designer and university professor. He was married to Susi Berger ; together the artist and designer couple were known as Susi and Ueli Berger .

Life and work

Ueli Berger was born in Bern in 1937 in an art-loving family. His mother Hedwig Berger-Meienberg was a photographer, his father Hermann Berger a master painter and his grandfather Alois Meienberg a painter.

Between 1953 and 1956 he completed an apprenticeship as a painter with Werner Thomet. In 1958 he began to attend courses at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Bern, where he met Susi Berger (then Wyss). In 1960 he began training in furniture design, design and interior design with a traineeship with Hans Eichenberger , who had a strong influence on the beginning of Ueli Berger's career. Between 1965 and 1969 he was head of the design and development department at Troesch in Bern.

From the mid-1960s onwards, he was also active as an artist, took part in various art exhibitions and was a member of the avant-garde group “Bern 66”. In the course of his work he was able to realize many solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad. His works include installations , objects, photomontages and works on paper. His oeuvre was multidisciplinary and repeatedly crossed the boundaries between architecture and design.

Ueli Berger began his artistic work in the tradition of constructivism and over time developed a more experimental approach. He dealt with topics of light, movement and the interaction between surface and space. From the beginning of the 1970s, he carried out overall artistic designs for buildings and public spaces, as well as interventions on demolition objects. In his installations, objects in public space often served as a starting point, such as the sculpture for pedestrians that was designed for the 8th sculpture exhibition in Biel (1986).

In his work as a designer - especially as a furniture designer - a clear development in his approach to work can be seen between his earlier and later works. At the beginning he was still committed to the so-called " good form " with its functional and economic design thinking, over time he developed a more playful, pleasurable design approach, which also characterizes the lifelong collaboration with his wife Susi Berger.

In 1970 he started his own business as an artist and designer. In the course of his career, Ueli Berger developed close cooperation with various universities. He was co-founder of the free art class at the School of Design in Bern, where he taught from 1978 to 1993. In addition, between 1982 and 1986 he had a teaching position for sculptural design at the ETH Zurich . Finally, from 2001 to 2002 he taught at the École cantonale d'art du Valais in Sierre.

Ueli and Susi Berger met at the arts and crafts school in Bern and married in 1962. The couple has three children (* 1963, * 1964, * 1967).

In parallel to their own art and design projects, Ueli and Susi Berger have developed joint projects throughout their lives. Their collaboration was multidisciplinary and spanned design, art, graphics, construction art, public art and handicrafts . A precise point in time for the start of the collaboration cannot be defined. From the start, their relationship was characterized by a lively exchange of ideas. From the beginning of the 1960s this led to close and fruitful collaboration in the design of furniture and from the 1970s to joint interventions on buildings and in public spaces. The collaboration has resulted in the drafting and production of iconic works - especially in the area of furniture design.
