Susi Berger-Wyss (born March 30, 1938 in Lucerne as Susanna Ottilia Franziska Wyss ; † April 2, 2019 in Ersigen ) was a Swiss graphic artist, product designer and artisan. She was married to Ueli Berger , together the artist and designer couple were known as Susi and Ueli Berger .

Life and work

Susi Berger-Wyss was born on March 30, 1938, the daughter of Alice Wyss-Halter, a language teacher, and Hans Wyss, a businessman who was interested in art, music, architecture and photography. Born in Lucerne, she grew up in Bern as a middle child (siblings Hansjörg , * 1935, and Hedi , * 1940) and attended grammar school there.

In 1958 she completed her graphic studies with Walter Ottiger and Ernst Jordi, among others, with a federal diploma. At the same time, she took classical singing lessons and performed regularly at song recitals. In the same year she met Ueli Berger at the arts and crafts school. She also worked as a freelance graphic designer throughout her life. After completing her apprenticeship, she worked for the Sandmeier advertising agency (later Young & Rubicam ) from 1958 to 1962 . In 1962 she was accepted into the Association of Swiss Graphic Artists (VSG).

As a freelance graphic designer, she designed images for various art galleries, designed exhibition posters and worked with architectural offices in the areas of coloring, choice of materials and information design for public buildings (e.g. the PTT in Olten and Solothurn and the vocational training centers in Grenchen and Olten). In addition, Susi Berger also designed jewelry, textiles and ceramics and - at a later point in time - dealt with photography.

In the course of her career, Susi Berger-Wyss was a regular member of various juries and expert groups. In the 1970s she was a member of the Swiss poster jury and until the 1990s she served - together with Ueli Berger - as an expert in assessing the diploma theses of the fine art class at the School of Design in Bern. In 2004 she was on the jury for the Bear Park, Bern.

In parallel to their own art and design projects, Ueli and Susi Berger have developed joint projects throughout their lives. Their collaboration was multidisciplinary and spanned design, art, graphics, construction art, public art and handicrafts. A precise point in time for the start of the collaboration cannot be defined. However, their relationship was characterized by a lively exchange of ideas from the start. The collaboration has resulted in the drafting and production of iconic works - especially in the area of furniture design.
