history

The publishing house was founded by the photographer, painter and publisher Ernst Scheidegger (1923–2016). The basis was his friendship with Alberto Giacometti, whom he met in 1943 during his military service in Maloja . This resulted in numerous pictures that Ernst Scheidegger took in Bergell and Paris. In 1962, Jean Genet's book on the life and work of Alberto Giacometti was the first to appear in what was then known as Verlag Ernst Scheidegger. Numerous other books followed later, including drawings by Alberto Giacometti and photographic memories of Ernst Scheidegger. At the same time, the publishing program has been continuously supplemented over the decades with books about other important artists.

In 1997 Heiner Spiess joined “Verlag Ernst Scheidegger”, which is why it was renamed “Verlag Scheidegger und Spiess AG”. Heiner Spiess was one of the co-founders of Limmat Verlag . As a result, numerous projects arose in collaboration with well-known Swiss museums such as the Kunsthaus Zürich , the Kunstmuseum Basel , the Kunstmuseum Bern , the Kunstmuseum Winterthur and the Fotomuseum Winterthur .

After the death of the artist, exhibition organizer and publisher Johannes Gachnang , the Scheidegger und Spiess publishing house took over the book inventory and the publishing archive of “Verlag Gachnang & Springer AG” in the summer of 2006. After co-owner Heiner Spiess died in May 2006, Thomas Kramer took over the management of the publishing house in November 2006.
