Ernst Scheidegger (born November 30, 1923 in Rorschach ; † February 16, 2016 in Zurich ) was a Swiss photographer , painter and publisher .

Live and act

Ernst Scheidegger visited in Zurich at Hans Finsler the photography class. Ernst Scheidegger went in and out of Alberto Giacometti's Paris studio as a photographer and friend . As a photo reporter, he traveled to the Arab world , India and the Far East for the Magnum photo agency . When Scheidegger accompanied Khrushchev's trip to India in 1954 , Robert Capa stepped in instead of reporting from the Indochina War .

As an artist, his work brought him together with Fernand Léger , Cartier-Bresson , Max Bill , Werner Bischof , Richard Paul Lohse and Man Ray . As early as 1943 he made recordings of Alberto Giacometti's studios in Maloja , Stampa and Paris and published them in 1958 as a book together with his autobiographical and poetic texts in Arche Verlag . Scheidegger worked from 1959 to 1960 as a lecturer in visual design at the College of Design in Ulm . He has also worked with film directors Gregory Ratoff and John Huston ( Moby Dick ). From 1960 to 1988 he was a photo editor for the weekend supplement of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung .

In 1962 he founded the "Verlag Ernst Scheidegger"; the first book to appear was the German translation of Jean Genet's L'Atelier d'Alberto Giacometti under the title Alberto Giacometti . This was later followed by numerous other publications on Giacometti and other important artists. Since 1997 the publisher has been operating as “ Verlag Scheidegger und Spiess ”.

Some of his Alberto Giacometti photographs were exhibited at the Craig Krull Gallery in Santa Monica , California in 2008 .

Scheidegger's collection of 87 original prints by his colleagues from the Magnum period was acquired by the Museum Folkwang Essen in 2013 . On the occasion of his 90th birthday, the museum showed a selection from its collection with photographs by Werner Bischof , Robert Capa , Henri Cartier-Bresson , Ernst Haas , George Rodger , Ruth Orkin , David Seymour and Ernst Scheidegger.
